TL;DR

Grab ahold of your Konami Justifier, it’s time to break into some sort of private facility and gun down a bunch of bad guys holding guns in Nobuyuki Forces 4. A free game that you can play in your browser (sorry, no light gun required) using your mouse and keyboard.

Taking cover allows you to reload your weapon and steady your aim.

Nobuyuki Forces 4 starts off with a menu. No title screen or background to the story. Just a menu that allows you to control difficulty or make adjustments to your character much like in an RPG with experience points. You have a maximum amount of points to use and you can move them from one category to another. Weather that been in the area of maximum hit points, reload speed or bullet capacity. An interesting feature to have in an on-rails shooter and other than the bullet and item capacity settings, I didn’t see much of a difference in changing the settings around. I mean, come on, it’s just a light gun game. Oh well.

Take 'em down!

You play the part of a female protagonist for, at least for this review, is nameless. And she is definitely not one you want to cross in a dark alley. Taking cover wherever you can find it, she’ll be jutting out and mowing down enemies with her sidearm. As you traverse the areas, you’ll have ability to pick up extra health containers or increase your bullet capacity although being limited to your max item capacity of which ever you choose during the menu screen.

The environment can be effected as well with bullet shots.

Pressing the spacebar will grant you cover from enemy fire and give you a chance to reload. This is where the similarities start showing through from great arcade hits like Time Crisis. Holding down the spacebar again will put you right back into the action. Using your mouse as a crosshair to direct your bullets, killing off everyone in a particular room will advance the game. It’s extremely satisfying to come out from cover to take down some baddies and then retrieving to cover to reload. There’s something about the cover command in shooters that really piques my excitement. Adds a bit of realism to it, I guess.

Kill the tank with the pistol!

The graphics are an interesting mix of 2D sprites for your character and the aggressors with the backgrounds and environments rendered in 3D. Usually this would clash and the sprites would stick out like a sore thumb but the artist seems to have taken the time for detailed sprites and the full look is very pretty. It’s not very distraction like you would think it would be and the game flows extremely well because of it. You’ll always know exactly what you’re supposed to shoot. The music feels like your common garden variety creative commons tunes which isn’t necessarily a bad thing but it doesn’t stick out or give itself presence in the game as a whole.

Now that is style.

Nobuyuki Forces 4 is fairly short consisting of only four levels, each with their own stages and boss fights. (In one you get to take down a giant tank with just your pistol. Explain that one to me.) After completing the game, you’ll unlock a stage select, time trial run for each stage and a time attack mode for the whole game. This one packs a lot of punch into just a small space for repeat offenders wanting to come back looking for more.

You have 9 credits at the start.

Nobuyuki Forces 4 is a free game that you can play in your browser and brings the sights, sounds and gameplay mechanics to your computer of other popular light gun games such as Time Crisis and Virtua Cop. Although the game is fairly short, there is a lot that can bring a veteran on-rails shooter fan back to fine tune his/her score. The graphics are a nice display of 2D sprites on 3D rendered backgrounds that’s done right. Plus it’s free. And you can play it in your browser. Need I say more?
